Most parents, think first person shooters are bad for their kids and are the reasons for school shootings. So lets see the effects of first person shooters on kids and if the parent who think they’re bad are right.
Now most parents say that the people involved with schools shooting were affected with first person shooter when they played them but that is not known instead it could and most likely was: drugs illegal and allowed, bad life at home, and bulling. Now lets take a closer look at some of these reasons. Lets first talk about illegal drugs. Since there are a lot of gangs that use illegal drugs most teens could easily get some if they are in gangs this could make the person more violent. But even if the child is not in a gang it is still possible to have drugs that could make a person more violent for example depression drugs these are known to make a person more violent. What about bad life at home well if the kid is used and abused by (his hers) parent this could be of the person wants to hurt the parent that hurts (him her) but since the parent is going to easily just punish the kid. So instead the kids take (his or her) wrath on kids at school or other people at school and not. It is almost the same way with bulling if the kid is hurt by the bully that kid will most of the time want to hurt him back so the kid brings a gun to school shoots the bully and hurts or kills other people while (he or she) is at it.
But if you only look at the bad side of things you get the wrong idea so lets see some good things about first person shooters. First the reaction time is increased with people you play first person shooters this is helpful with driving and other things. The people who play these games also can do problems faster then others and still have the same amount of accuracy and as people who don’t play first person shooters.
Here are some studies done by two university’s on this subject.
In 1961 a study done by Stanford University scientist found out that kids who watched adults be violent would be more likely to do violent things. Here is what the scientist did to find this out. First the put some preschoolers in a room with toys after a small amount of time a adult came in the room and sat in a corner with a 3 foot tall Bobo clown doll. The adult then would start to do violent thing with the doll while saying thing like “sock him in the nose” or pow. After that the kids where sent to another room where they’re were some new toys but only after two minutes a lab assistant said that those toys where her best toys and so the kids were sent to another room with: crayons, dart guns, a tea set, a mallet, and three foot tall Bobo doll. Since the kids were mad about having new toys taken from them some of the preschools who had watched Bobo get punched and hit, they where more likely to attack the doll (of course Bobo dolls are fun to just knock over any way). So it is true that watching people attack something could make you more violent of course this doesn’t mean people it could be video games but it still doesn’t mean it is just video games fault.
What about desensitizing could first person shooters do that well a study done by the University of Bonn thing that maybe the case here is what the did. They first took 21 people ranging from 20-30 and got them to play first person shooters for 15 hours a week versus 19 people who had zero experience with first person shooters. They people who played first person shooters for 15 hours a week were after they played were showed pictures of disasters and violence. The people who played first person shooters showed that after they played the games and were showed the pictures didn’t react to it as much as the people who didn’t play the first person shooters. But DR. Montag (one of the scientist) said that they’re was some desensitizing even in the people who hadn’t played first person shooters after they were showed the pictures.
Now don’t take this as true since this is not confirmed but if the game is very realistic and if they are reminded that war is not a game then they could see just as bad war really is.
So as you can see this could go both ways it could end up with the kid getting better at thing or if the kid does dumb/crazy things it could possibly end up with a killer.
